How to Know if Your Child is Struggling in School

Wow!  I can't believe that summer is nearly over and that teachers across the Indianapolis area are preparing for parent/teacher conferences and first report cards! Sadly, if your child is falling behind in school, you may be the last to know about it. Your child might be too embarrassed or ashamed to ask for help in school. That's why it's imperative that parents be aware of the warning signs below:

How to Know if Your Child is Struggling in School:

1.  Avoids talking about school.

When you ask your child, "How did school go today?" and they try everything possible to avoid the subject, then it is quite possible that your child is struggling in his or her learning environment.

2.  Increased "Neediness".

If your, once confident, child has recently become more dependent upon you and your approval then that is a good indication that something is amiss at school.

3.  Increased Anger/Aggression/Anxiety

If you notice that your child becomes angry, aggressive, or anxious shortly before/after school then this may be an indication that your child is having a hard time with learning while at school.

4.  Feeling "Sick"

As an educator, I've seen this happen time and again.  When a student is struggling in school they will often try to find a way "out" by claiming they feel sick.  Of course it is always important to make sure your child isn't really feeling ill!  But, if it seems your child is always feeling "sick" while at school, this can sometimes be an indication that he or she is struggling and needs additional help.

If your child has any or all of these warning signs, it is crucial that you take the steps necessary to get your child the help he or she needs.  School is MUCH harder, than when we were kids, today.  I have students who are doing pre-algebra skills in FIRST grade now and I have 6th graders who are doing 8th grade work on a daily basis.  I'm finding more and more that children in the Indianapolis area are being expected to know so much and in some cases really aren't being taught even rudimentary skills.

Please call Reach for the Stars Tutoring today, at 317-200-2653, so that we can discuss your child's learning needs.  At this time, because of my over-booked schedule of students, I am only able to accept pupils who are either in close proximity to Greenwood, Southport, Decatur, Plainfield, and Avon or are willing to travel to one of these sites.
